Last night, I'm driving home down a state highway when I spotted a dog running across the highway, no human around.

I followed it and pulled over on the street to try to get to him. I got close a couple of times but he was very skiddish. Another driver saw us and pulled over too, also trying to call the dog. I was just at the pet store, so I even had freeze-dried chicken hearts, that most dogs go crazy over, and I still couldn't lure him close enough to grab his collar.

Eventually, he barked at me in a "stranger danger" tone and ran off, thankfully towards the residential neighborhood and away from the highway and frontage road where we were, so I hope he knew where he was going. The other driver that stopped said she lives in that neighborhood and was going to walk around and see if she could spot him.

It made me realize how truly important it is to have a dog that is well socialized and knows their basic obedience, it may save their life.
